International Mother Language Day (IMLD)
El Día Internacional de la Lengua Materna (IMLD) se observa y celebra todos los años el 21 de febrero. El día fue anunciado por primera vez por la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Educación, la Ciencia y la Cultura (UNESCO) en 1999. El objetivo principal de esta conmemoración es promover la conciencia pública sobre la diversidad lingüística y cultural y el multilingüismo. La Universidad de Sudáfrica organiza este día para crear conciencia sobre la educación basada en la lengua materna y el potencial del multilingüismo para transformar la educación.
The International Mother Language Day (IMLD) is observed and celebrated every year on 21 February. The day was first announced by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1999. The main purpose of this commemoration is to promote public awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity, and multilingualism. The University of South Africa hosts this day to raise awareness about mother tongue-based education and the potential of multilingualism in transforming education.
This year is the 24th annual celebration of the Day. The theme for 2023 is «multilingual education—a necessity to transform education.»
