ABOUT Yannis Lobaina

Yannis Lobaina  ​is an Award-winning Toronto-based artist with more than twelve years of experience as a published author, creative visual storyteller, ​art facilitator and ​emerging filmmaker.​She is originally from Cuba. Yannis loves to explore immigration, diaspora, and motherhood themes through different storytelling tools. ​

These boots are made for walking in the Snow. It is part of nine personal essays about my emigration stories. This personal essay was developed in The Shoe Project workshops and performance in George Ignatieff Theatre, University of Toronto, March 31 and April 2, 2019. 

She ​has published worldwide more than 25 short fiction stories and Flash Non-fiction essays. 2020​, she issued in ​Tint Journal Magazine with non-fiction called Canadiana Boots. ​And published a ​Short story​ Deeply rooted with Publisher​ Editorial Mapale​.​ She has produced more than 40 short fiction and documentaries in Cuba. https://vimeo.com/446279810.

Yannis received the RBC Arts Access Fund (Toronto Arts Foundation, 2019), which helped fund her photography exhibition ​‘Rebirth,’ which was showcased in August 2019 by Raw Artist Network (Toronto) at Mod Club. In 2018, she received the RBC Arts Access Fund (Toronto Arts Foundation), which helped fund her facilitate multiple creative writing and Bilingual storytelling workshops for children in the various branches. In 2017, Yannis received a Micro-Grant recipient for her short Documentary ​«Where the Magic Happens» ​as an emerging filmmaker.

Lobaina is currently working on a series of ​photo essays ​called ​«Awake.» focusing on minimal visual storytelling photography and capturing mother nature’s fleeting moments and beauty.

Desde 2016 cuando creé mi proyecto de Escritura Creativa & Storytelling Bilingüe (Español – Inglés), he realizado más de 100 actividades en diferentes lugares de Toronto.
Siempre, en mis proyectos, celebro mi cultura, mis antepasados y mi herencia. Eso es algo que hago por el gran honor de transmitir mi herencia cultural a mi hija y al público que se preocupa por aprender sobre nosotros.
He recibido el premio RBC Arts Access Award, Neighborhood Arts Network, Canadá, 2018, con quien siempre estoy agradecido. Con este valioso apoyo, llevo mi serie de talleres de proyectos a varias sucursales de Bibliotecas Públicas de Toronto, como Maria A. Shchuka branch, the Mount Dennis Library. Fort York Library, Forest Hill Library branch, Bloor and Gladstone Library. Also private and public schools like West Preparatory Junior Public school and  Toronto festivals like Happenig Festival. etc.

Since 2016 when I created my Bilingual( Spanish – English)Creative writing & Storytelling project, I have carried out more than 100 activities in different places in Toronto.
Always, in my projects, I celebrate my culture, my ancestors and my heritage. That is something I do for the great honour of transmitting my cultural heritage to my daughter and the audience who cares to learn about us.
