Yannis Lobaina
BIO
Yannis Lobaina (b. 1979, Baracoa, Cuba) is an award-winning Cuban artist, author, mindful nature photographer, filmmaker, and arts-based workshop facilitator based in Toronto. Her work focuses on themes such as art, motherhood, immigration, and the magic of everyday life. As a photographer, Yannis specializes in minimalist visual storytelling, capturing fleeting moments of beauty, patterns, sacred geometry, textures, and pareidolia (the perception of faces) in nature. Her photography encourages viewers to pause and appreciate the stillness, calm, and beauty of the natural world.Yannis is passionate about slow creativity, mindful living, slow travel, and ethical photography—principles that are integral to her work. She has received numerous awards and recognition from the Toronto Arts Council, the Ontario Arts Council, and the Toronto Arts Foundation. As a new Canadian, these accolades have enabled her to exhibit her photographs and mixed-media artworks at various galleries across Toronto. In addition to her art practice, Yannis is the host and producer of “The Yannis Lobaina Podcast: We Should Talk,” and she is the founder of AlbART Global Collective. She firmly believes that the arts can be a powerful tool for social change and peacemaking.
Yannis is passionate about slow creativity, mindful living, slow travel, and ethical photography. These principles are important to her work. She has received many awards and recognitions from the Toronto Arts Council, Ontario Arts Council, and Toronto Arts Foundation. As a new Canadian, these honors have helped her exhibit her photographs and mixed media artworks at various places, including Remote Gallery (2021, 2023), The Oakwood Village Library (February 2023), North York Central Library (August 2024), and as an emerging curator at the Etobicoke Civic Centre Art Gallery (July 2024), as well as in private collections.
Yannis’ writing is deeply impacted by her multiethnic identity as a multilingual person, woman of colour, mother and immigrant. Also, she is the host and producer of the “The Yannis Lobaina Podcast _ We Should Talk,” Podcast and the Founder of AlbART Global Collective. She firmly believes that the arts can be a powerful tool for social change and peacemaking.
